NEWS RELEASE
Beijing House Church Minister Hua Huiqi and
his Mother Attacked by Police
House church minister Hua Huiqi and his mother were attacked and wounded in Beijing in the morning of January 26, 2007. Hua is well-known in assisting fellow citizens to plead for their legal rights.
According to Mr. Hua’s wife Wei Jumei, seven police officers attacked both Hua and his 76 year old mother while they were walking nearby a 2008 Olympic hotel site at about 8am of January 26. The policemen kicked them and took them away to the Olympic Police Station for questioning.
As Hua asked the police to explain the legal ground for the detention and release his mother who was sick, he was beaten up repeatedly and poured over with cold water (it was about 20 degrees in Beijing). Wet through and trembling Hua was taken away to a detention center.
On 27th, Hua’s wife was told by the police over the phone that Hua had been
sentenced for one month of criminal detention. None of Hua’s family members has
received any official notice yet regarding Hua’s detention so far.
Hua and his wife are very active house church Christians in Beijing. They have
been assisting lots of persecuted Christians and oppressed peasants who travel
to Beijing from other parts of the country to seek justice from the central
government.
We urge the Chinese government to immediately release Hua and his mother.
Letters and Phone calls to protest brother Hua’s arrest can be sent to

(Chinese House Church reports from Shandong, Sep. 2) On September 1st, a house church in Shoushan of Shandong province was surrounded and raided by police during their service and all attendants were arrested and interrogated. Dr. Sam Chao, a well-known Church history scholar who was traveling in China, was among the detained.
Close to fifty believers were participating in a meeting in the house church with Dr. Chao being the only visitor. At 2:30 pm, approximately 100 policemen surrounded the house. Thirty to forty officials broke into the house declaring, “It has been reported that a Falun Gong meeting is being held here!!” At that time, several officers immediately moved Dr. Chao into another room.
Around 3:30 pm, all those who were in the house church attending the service were bused to the local police station. From there, they were sent to several different stations to have their depositions taken. Most of them were released after ten hours or more.
Through the entire duration of detention, the authorities failed to provide food, water, or sustenance of any kind. Most of the detainees experienced physical abuse. Following their release, they found their meeting place looted with money and valuables missing. Dr. Chao has also been released and is currently petitioning for the return of his personal belongings as well as that of his friends’ which were confiscated by police during the raid.
Since the beginning of summer, the Chinese police have extended their raids on house church meetings not only in frequency but also in a wider geographical location than ever before. Under the pretense of “cracking down cults”, the Chinese police never offer evidence or reasonable explanation for any of their actions against the house churches. It is also very common for the police to take money and valuables in the name of “executing official tasks”.
